Following the line of 72 Tennants of Prosperity (2010), Hong Kong is producing sequels to films that were original in previous decades. This is not as bad as doing remakes, but is far from ideal, and shortens the distance to the vomit machine that is Hollywood, alarmingly. Especially if we speak of a market trend, not a particular film.

The Flirting Scholar (1993) with Stephen Chow and Gong Li was a success and is highly recommended for those who enjoy the comedy of Stephen Chow. In the same line of "Justice My Foot" and "Royal Tramp" Chow film puts a satirical character in antiquity and continues its entanglements.

This new release, 17 years later, is intended as a prequel to the original. With the veteran Nat Chan Pak Cheung 陈百祥 integrating the cast of both productions, the new release features Richie Ren and Yuen King Tan 苑琼丹. Is likely to reinvent and final result is not bad. But not a good idea to force yourself to compete successfully in Stephen Chow and Gong Li in decades past, because doing that and get away with it is very difficult.
